If you like fantasy or urban fantasy, you'll really LOVE this one. The Staff starts out eons ago, in the middle of a war between good and evil. After the bad guy has been dispatched in a temporary fashion, we are then thrust into modern day America and into the life of Jake, a crotchety old man living alone. Well, almost alone. He has plenty of regrets and sadness to keep him company. When his teenage grandson, whom he has never had contact with, comes to visit, Jake finds his life turned upside down. Not only that, but he and his grandson see the same spooky old man that disappears as soon as he is spotted.Their search brings them to a place Jake had felt drawn to since he was a boy. A bear chases them down into a cavern and they once again see the spooky old man. They go down the tunnel and find themselves thrust into more danger than either of them could handle.
After traveling many days through a series of tunnels, Jake comes face-to-face with his destiny: he is the Chosen of the Earth Mother. He learns he must fight Morag and stop him helping the nameless ones from covering the Earth in shadow forever.
I loved this book from beginning to end. There were some strange formatting errors that placed quotation marks in place of apostrophes that took me out of the story a few times but nothing that was too bad. The characters are superb. You love Jake as you come to learn the reasons why he turned his back on his family. It's endearing to watch his relationship with his grandson growing stronger throughout the book.

This is an excellent historical fantasy and is quite well written. It incorporates substantial real historical elements into a story about 3 monks (with 'gifts'), a Templar Knight and ample inane evil. (I consider Evil to always be inane!) Anyway, its a well told tale and worth your time.
I know it just came out. I bet you're thinking, no way this guy read it that fast. I had a head start. I own it in hard copy. You're going to love it. Really love it. I never thought of myself as someone that can get into a fantasy book, well that's what I thought it was, but it certainly got my full attention. What an awesome read from beginning to end. This one will grab you too. I know it will. And then if you don't have it already, go get The Camera Guy
