I missed the sassy nature of River! This series was absolutely a blast and I will most certainly be watching and buying more. Its not an audiobook, its a radio show like the old days before tv. There is no way to go back to the boring audiobooks now!Product details

The Diary of River Song No 2 John Dorney Guy Adams James Goss Matt Fitton 9781785754258 Books Reviews
This collection features four more adventures with River Song featuring the Sixth and/or Seventh Doctors in all but one of them
The Set begins with "The Unknown,"
River Song is aboard a spaceship heading towards an planet with a strange anomaly. The Seventh Doctor is in the brig and River doesn't recognize him but it becomes clear that he needed to save the ship and get to the bottom of what's going on.
The story is actually clever and has a great mystery as well as a solid resolution. I think Big Finish is getting a better handle on how to deal with River Song, and the challenge of her relating to pre-Time War Doctors. The first two times in the first box set and Doom Coalition 2, it felt a bit forced. Here, you have a clever plot that allows the Doctor and River Song to work together and also preserves their time line.
If I had any complaint, it would be that the supporting characters are forgettable stock characters, which is surprising for a Guy Adams script. Still, this is a nice bit of action Sci Fi that sets up the rest of the box set nicely.
Next up is Five-Twenty-Nine in which River Song travels back to Earth's history and lands on an island where an elderly couple with an android daughter live. River Song knows based on what she learned in the last story that a catastrophe is going to hit the globe and she's determined to do what she can to stop it.
Writer John Dorney deserves credit for doing something different with River Song in throwing her into a story with ordinary human beings from who live relatively primitive lives. It's such an unusual set up for River Song whose stories always seem to involve big over the top characters. Alex Kingston nails this perfectly playing the human drama for all its worth. There are few characters in this one, but they are some of the best that Dorney has created. The story has a charm to it, but also has that melancholy and world-weary feeling that Absent Friends had in Doom Coalition III.
This could so easily have been a throw away story as the only Doctor-free story in the set, but Dorney and a great cast make this into something beautiful and memorable.
In "World Enough and Time, " River Song is hired as temp for an agency that allows people to dream their live away and the Sixth Doctor is the Managing Director, an of course there's nefarious goings on.
This story has some great points. The idea of the Doctor being distracted from looking into real problems due to the busy work that owning the company requires is actually a clever bit of social commentary. Colin Baker and Alex Kingston have a very smooth chemistry that makes the story enjoyable.
Unfortunately, while the story has a lot of good stuff, it's also a bit dense and has far more than it's of technobabble and convoluted twists which makes this a weaker story, though still enjoyable for the good parts.
The set wraps up with Eye of the Storm, The characters make this worthwhile. The interactions between River Song and the Sixth and Seventh are very fun, particularly with the strong romance between Six and River continuing from the previous release. The Seventh Doctor has some interesting scenes, the best of which is the scene in which they have tea at the end of the story. Overall these interactions bring some character moments, and some good comedy. Also, the store being set in 1703 allows Daniel DeFoe to appear.
The plot is all over the place. The story grows convoluted in explaining what's responsible for the destruction of the Earth in the Future. I'm still at a lost to explain what happened to two key characters. The best part of the final plot is that the Sixth and Seventh Doctor's styles are contrasted.
There are some really fun moments and great interactions that make this a delight for fans of New and Classic Who, but the story itself is too hard to follow.
Overall, this set is good but flawed, particularly in the final two stories. The stories have lots of fun, energy, and engaging characters, as well as solid acting and great sound design. However, the stories can occasionally be too clever by half and lack solid logic.
the voice acting was great! I wanted more!
A great way to continue river and the previous Drs a must have for all true whovians.
Even better than the first set.
I missed the sassy nature of River! This series was absolutely a blast and I will most certainly be watching and buying more. Its not an audiobook, its a radio show like the old days before tv. There is no way to go back to the boring audiobooks now!
